Home Tutors

The primary duty to educate rests with parents, and parents have the legal right to educate their child at home. Parents may choose to exercise this right for a variety of reasons. If you choose to do this then you must notify your child's school in writing that you wish to withdraw them from the school role. The school should tell Havering Social Care and Learning within two weeks that you have elected to home educate your child.

If you child has not been enrolled in a school it would be most helpful if you would make an initial contact so that we are able to fulfil our obligations towards your child. The child must continue to receive education until the last Friday in June in the school year in which they reach age 16.

Home education and home tuition

It may be helpful to clarify the difference between home education and home tuition. Home education is where a parent elects to undertake responsibility for providing their child's education, including both planning and delivering an educational programme. Home tuition is provided by Havering Social Care and Learning for pupils who are temporarily unable to attend school for reasons of long term health problems or other exceptional reasons. It is expected that all these children will return to their school as soon as they are able to do so.
